Preface to the Series
The present volume is a component of a series wliich, when completed, will constitute a comprehensive survey of the many aspects of East European society. A part of the publication cost for this book was covered by a grant from the György Ránki Hungarian Chair of Indiana University in Bloomington.
The books in tlie series deal with peoples whose homelands he between the Germans to tlie west, the Russians to the east, and the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas to the soutli. Tliey constitute a particular civilization, one that is at once an integral part of Europe, yet substantially different from the West. The area is cliaracterized by a rich diversity of language, religion and government. The study of such a complex subject demands multidisciplinary approach and, accordingly, our contributors to the series represent several academic disciplines. They have been drawn from the universities and other scholarly institutions in the United States and West-em Europe, as well as East and Central Europe. The editor of the present volume is a distinguished liistorian, and professor of Hungarian History at Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest (ELTE), and Hungarian Chair Professor at Indiana University, 1993-1995.
The editors of the series, of course, take full responsibility for ensuring the comprehensiveness, cohesion, internal balance, and scholarly quality of tlie series. We cheerfully accept tliis responsibility and intend this work to be neitlier justification nor condemnation of tlie policies, attitudes, and activities of any persons involved. At the same time, because the contributors represent so many different disciplines, interpretations, and schools of thought, our policy in this, as in the past and future volumes, is to present their contributions without major modifications.
