PREFACE A few years ago New In Chess were the first In the chess world to start a database for the storage of games. This database, however, could only be used by the editorial staff. The development of a chess program for the personal computer, ChessBase, has recently made it possible for every chessplayer to set up his or her own database.This highly important development creates at the same time a totally new need. The chessplayer will, as always, be interested In annotations by top ranking players, but owners of a homedatabase will, moreover, want to store the games in their system. For this reason New In Chess presents you with the first volume of the New Yearbook Series. The games it contains (including the ones quoted in the annotations) have also been put onto disk. Stored in your database the games will be at your immediate disposal, with references to where you may find extensive comment. Even if you do not yet own your own database, it is still important for you to know that the New Yearbook Series allows you to switch over to the homedatabase at any moment, since the Yearbooks 1/6 have also been brought out on disk, as indeed has the New In Chess Key. Fifteen thousand games a year These developments are not only important for present and future owners of a homedatabase: they also have a favourable effect on the contents of the Yearbooks themselves, for New In Chess has fully integrated the ChessBase program in its present system. This means, for example, that 15,0 0 0 games are stored annually. From this abundance of games the editors select all that is valuable for the development of chess theory so that, with the New Yearbook Series, you are sure to be kept fully informed. It will be clear that we have raised the frequency of the New Yearbooks from two to four volumes a year in order to keep up to date as much as possible. New in Chess Key The homedatabase ChessBase can only be used properly with a detailed openings classification system. The New In Chess classification (NIC-KEY), which consists of approximately nine thousand different positions, is such a system. The complete key is now available in print as well as on disk. Moreover, New In Chess is releasing the rights of this key for the owners of ChessBase for private use. Where necessary the NIC-KEY has been extended and supplemented. The most important alterations concern the Queen's Indian, where due to recent developments the code had to be changed radically. The most prominent modifications concern the transfer of a number of less frequent openings to other chapters. The Albin Counter Gambit, Budapest Gambit and Chigorin Defence, for example, can now be found in the VO-chapter, whilst the second part of QP (all lines with 1 .^f3) has been included in the Reti Opening (RE).
