SI Index Sicilian Defence 1. e4 c5 A lot of attention for the Dragon Heavy assaults on the Najdorf Variation There are so many games with this opening that somé of its main variations are more often played than other entire openings like for instance the Pirc-Ufimcev Defence. The variation that attracted the most attention was perhaps the Dragon. Lobron won a nice game against Miles (S118.11) but the latter didn't adopt the most fashionable method of defence for Black which was seen, for example, in the Utrecht Centenary Theme Tournament. One of the most interesting discoveries made in this remarkable tournament was the new move 16...Ljd5 in Van der Wiel - Etmans (SI 18.14). Of great theoretical importance is the correspondence game Vitomskis - Koifman (SI 18.7). If no improvements for Black can be found here it looks as if the whole variation where Black allows h5 has been totally refuted by Vitomskis. For those who prefer a somewhat quieter sort of position there may be interesting material for the study of the 6..&e2-lines in the games Timman - Ljubojevic (SI 16.3) and Gallego - Martin and Reyes - Martin (SI 15.7). The 6.&c4-variation was played in one of the matchgames Popovic - Chiburdanidze (SI 15.1). In the ever-popular Scheveninger Variation somé games showed a model handling of the white pieces, in particular Geller - Yap (SI 24.9) and Prandstetter - Ftacnik (SI 23.6). Important for one of the currently fashionable anti-Le2- lines is Beliavsky - Yudasin (SI 23.6) where Beliavsky played the opening very well but failed to capitalize on his advantage. The Keres Attack förmed the battlefield for no less than three games Ljubojevic - Timman (all SI 20.5) which were all won by White. Quite an unusual feat and rather good propaganda for Keres' move 6.g4. Other noteworthy games are Nunn - Bischoff (SI 20.5) and in particular Pavlov - Ghinda (SI 20.5). Panchenko's move 6...e5 was adopted by Ree in games against Peelen and Van der Wiel (SI 20.1). Theory of the line with jLe3, Wd2 and f3 was further developed in the games Inkiov - Vera and Short - Polugaevsky (both S119.1). 13
