sr Index Sicilian Defence 1. e4 c5 1' if 1' A I'' Did Karpov find the answer to the Kasparov Gambit? A new line against the Sicilian Scheveningen The Sicilian Defence is undisputedly the most popular of all openings, and its theory is, therefore, constantly in motion, with novelties of smaller or greater impact being played in almost every tournament of importance. Two of its variations, the Taimanov and the .S.e2-Scheveningen were played In the 1985 World Championship match between Karpov and Kasparov and these games naturally form an important theoretical contribution. Probably the most spectacular novelty of the year was Kasparov's 8 d5, which he used In game 12 and 16 (SI 39.3), the latter game ending in a stunning defeat for Karpov. The move Immediately raised worldwide discussion and a lot of deep analysis was published. But It looks like Karpov spoke the most important word about it when he unleashed the big improvement 12.^e3 in his game against Van der Wiel in Brussels 1986 (SI 39.3). Also very remarkable was Karpov's 6.g4 In the 14th game of the above-mentioned match (SI 39.4), while a serious threat to one of the most subtle lines in the Taimanov variation was posed by Plaskett's audacious new move lO.ii'gS in his game against Hartston (SI 39.10). In the Scheveningen variation Kasparov also held his own very easily with Black, scoring 3 draws and a win in the crucial last game (SI 24.8), which was of considerable theoretical significance as well. Another important game in this variation is Sokolov - Ribli (SI 24.8). In the Keres-attack Panchenko has used the unusual 6 e5 to score a few solid draws (SI 20.1). This move seems to deserve closer attention. The Main Line was played in quite a few games and it looks like the old standard strategy of castling queenside with Black (as seen in Ermenkov - Vogt, SI 20.5) might be replaced by the more aggressive plan involving
