many years of teaching, a mast often heard remark has been, "I know I could paint if I just had the time." Still life is the most convenient way to learn to draw, paint and compose. Fruit, vegetables and household objects are always readily available. A free and loose style of painting is faster and looks less photographic. It is not necessary to paint the whole world on one canvas. If your time is limited, paint just a few items on a small scale. You can paint a little picture like the sketches shown at right on an 8" x J 0" canvas, using only a small section from the painting below. One of these can be done easily in less than an hour. One hour each day will give you half a dozen pictures a week. These are inexpensive to paint and to frame. If you group them nicely on a wall they can look more interesting than a single, large, labored painting. So you really do have time to paint. For you beginners, if is not necessary to spend money on lots of materials. It is even foolish for persons with limited incomes. A few colors, brushes, and canvas boards are all that are needed for an art career. After you prove a great success, then add all the other colors in the rainbow—and if you find out what to do with them—please let me know! A handful of brushes of the best quality will outlast dozens of inferior makes. When using canvas boards, it is best to rub linseed oil over them first. Make sure the oil is wiped off before applying the paint. The reason for this is to stop the absorbency and make the painting go faster. Read all you can about art, books, magazines, etc. This author first started painting by getting these Walter Foster books, many years ago. If you wish to paint in the abstract, modern, action and all the isms, fine—but first paint in the traditional manner, so if you do get lost you will always have a home to come back to. Practice your drawing, color and tonal values, then you can express and interpret the story in your own way. Musicians first learn to play the notes correctly, then when we go to their concerts, we already know the music—we really are going to hear their interpretation. Before you pick up a brush—have the picture painted in your mind. A hasty start can throw you off on your design and measurements. The method of practice in this book is not entirely directed to beginners. The advanced student and professional artist would do well to do studies like this for fun and get away from commercialism.
