Presidents Weekend February 15 to 17 K We Need YOU!!!!
The Amateur Team Championships are the most successful and fun chess tournaments in the U.S. except for the participation in the Amateur Team South. Unfortunately, the word had not gotten out about what a great tournament this is and attendance paled alongside the other regional Amateur Team Championships. In fact, the 2001 Amateur South was at first cancelled by the USCF as a national event.
When Larry Storch, Harvey Lerman and other members of the Central Florida Chess Club heard about the cancellation, they were aghast! They quiclily jumped in and asked me to help. Together we got USCF to reverse their decision to cancel the tournament. Together, we are organizing and sponsoring the 2001 Amateur Team South.
Let me tell you a little about
this wonderful tournament. You enter as a member of a four-man team. The average rating of the players on your team must be under 2200. It is a national championship event mixed with some fun asides. For example, prizes are awarded for the most interesting team names. Some teams even come dressed in costumes and there is a special prize for the most novel costumes. The winning team plays an Internet match for the national Amateur Team Championship with the winners of the Amateur Team East. Midwest and West tournaments.
And this year as part of the Amateur Team South, we have instituted a special Scholastic section for school children teams with an average rating under 1200!
For special side events we have two two-man team
championships: The Southern Amateur G/5 and the Southern Amateur G/60.
If you can't get a team together, come anyway; we will organize teams onsite.
Help Florida chess!
Have some fun!
Come to Orlando hi February!
