GHTHE CHESS QUEENby Ann Campbell1 have laught 2,000 students in Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas to play chess over the past 15 years. About four years ago 1 received a grant which allowed me to teach an entire school to play chess. Six hundred children from grades flrst-sixth were pushing pawns all over the school. In the morning they were sprawled out on the floor in the auditorium, halls, and any other spot they could find to play a quick game before the moming bell , sounded../ After school they played on the front steps while they were waitmg for their rides home. There were chessplayers in the back of classrooms after they fm-ished their work. There were rooms full of chessplayers during rainy day recesses. The principal told me that I had given the whole school Chep Fever, and a student who overheard him said, "I sure hope they never And a cure!"I warn schools when I go teach chess that it may be addictive and contagious. I have seen students who were obsessed with video games hang up their joy sticks when they catch chess fever. I have used chess with gifted students, students with learning disabilities, students with behavior problems, and regular classroom students from first grade to eighth grade. This summer I appeared on Mississippi Educational Television in a program entitled "Chess in Schools."Each month I'll give you a reason for having chess in the schools.1. Chess is a game which requires higher level thinking skills. It is an analytical game which requires strategy, problem solving, and spatial thinking. After learning to play chess, students have reported that they feel smarter, and I have seen students raise their math grades from D's to B's and C's to A's after getting hooked on chess.SIMPLE CHECKMATESby Sheila Phelan/ Ballantine/RandomHouseLast fall, wfien we were planning for the production of Simple Checkmates by A. J. Gillam, I spoke with Carolyn Weeramantry about the schedule for the delivery of Sunil's introduction. (Carolyn is Sunil's wife and the mother of Asuka and Hikaru Nakamura, both highly rated young chessplayers.)1 told Carolyn that after the foreword came in, the only thing 1 needed to worry about was getting the galleys proofread.Carolyn then suggested that her son, Asuka, who was nine at the time and whose rating hovered around 2,0001 believe, would probably be available to take on this job. Not surprisingly, Asuka's schoolwork wasn't taxing him overly, and she thought this would be a good challenge for him.Sure enough, Asuka got the galleys in January and worked extremely hard for us uncovering 21 problems including a checkmate that was incorrect even in the original. Asuka did an incredibly thorough job.We were so proud of Asuka that we gave him a special credit on the copyright page: "Special thanks to Ballantine's guest chess editor Asuka Nakamura,"Al! in all this was a National Scholastic Chess Foundation family effort. The book is doing very well so far and there will be more additions lo this new chess library in the future.^Asuka NakamuraNick Conticello (and the Manhattan Chess Club) was named "Organizer of the Year" at USCF's Awards Banquet during the U.S. Open Woodrow Harris received the Distinguished Service Award and Burt Hochberg was there to receive the Outstanding Career Achievement Award.
