THIS IS POLANDThe purpose of this brochure is to present a picture ofcontemporary Poland, a country situated on the Vistula andOdra, where two main routes, crossing Europe from Eastto West and from North to South, intersect. Poland's pre-sent population is over 33 million people, and over 10 mil-lion citizens of other countries in the world are of Polishorigin. With an area of 120,000 sq. miles, Poland is theseventh largest country in Europe, both with regard to areaand population.The necessity of developing multilevel international co-operation is a hallmark of our times. The exchange ofobjective information is obviously an essential condition forsuch cooperation. Hence we are presenting this picture of :a nation with a thousand years of dramatic history, a na-tion which at the cost of tremedous sacrifices borne overthe years which have elapsed since the end of World War II,has not only succeeded in eliminating its inherited back-wardness and recovered from the terrible losses in humanlife and property sustained during the war and Nazi occupa-tion, but has entered the modern age in every domain oflife;a nation of great socialist changes, increasingly integratedthanks to the elimination of social differences, and assuringan equal opportunity in life to all; a young nation withover 55 per cent of its people under thirty, in which theproblems and future of its youth are given priority ;a country which is an increasingly valued partner in in-ternational industrial and trade relations, a country whichhas attained a standard of development earning it a placeamong the ten leading industrial powers of the world ;a country working toward peaceful international coopera-
