Bővebb ismertető
Sydney, the largest city in the driest of continents, is a city of water. It spreads around the bays and inlets of one of the finest natural harbours in the world, and reaches up and down a coast scalloped with broad sandy beaches, northward to the deep fjord-like indentations of Broken Bay and southward to the river estuaries running into Botany Bay and Port Hacking. To the west it is virtually encircled by the Hawkesbury/Nepean River which, rising where the mountains march into the sea south of the city, winds its way through changing names to its ocean outlet in Broken Bay.Sydney is a city at once young and old, reaching restlessly to the skies but keeping a vigilant eye on its heritage as the site of the first European settlement in Australia. The exciting modern architecture of the city centre is ringed by living history. In The Rocks district, homes and buildings dating back to the earliest days have been faithfully restored, and imaginative plans are under way to preserve and restore parts of Woolloomooloo, relic of the Victorian era, on the opposite side of the city.
