PREFACE
A country of traditional hospitality, a country that is a hoUday para-y^^ disc: that is Switzerland, the land of the snow-clad Alps. JL jI. This book, abohshing distances and frontiers, sets out to lead you pleasantly through the cantons of the httle model republic. Not like an ofEcious guide, full of facts, figures, and dates, but rather like an ideal travelling companion and friend.
Ideal in that he knows when to say nothing and leave it to the pencil and the brush to speak. Illustrated maps, landscapes, and light-hearted sketches have an eloquence and a gaiety that are worth so many words. (There is a saying that a good picture is worth a thousand words.)
Nevertheless, we have tried not to overlook anything: neither the history nor the pride of a free country; neither the ancient buildings and monuments nor the folklore which gives the country so much of its charm.
Mountain-lovers will find described in these pages the magnificent opportunities that Switzerland offers the mountaineer, the fisherman and the skier—and those whose pleasures are less energetic will learn something of the quiet, peaceful havens, the surmy slopes, and the numerous watering-places of____ Switzerland.
