UNITED BY DIVERSITY
Carlos Garrido
"Island" has no plural. It is a convention of speech to speak of'is-lands" or "archipelago" as if these were a united reality. Island is individuality, consciousness of life, singularity in the oceanic magma of the unbeing. There are no two islands the same, because being an island is in itself incompatible with vague generalities.
This is why in ancient times it was thought that the dead journeyed to an island with dark shores. Gods, giants, witches, and nymphs all lorded it over their own islands. In one way or another every island was the equivalent of a continent. With its own inhabitants, a king or queen, different laws and customs. To go round the known world it was enough to travel from island to island: from world to world. "The Odyssey" gave rise to a long series of island-hopping sagas. Adventure par excellence.
There is no need to look back to mythologyThe Hies Balears (Balearic Islands) are the best example of such individuality Purely geographical and administrative aspects aside, each of them differs from its neighbours. They may share history language, certain traditions and even their way of making a living, but what truly unites them is their very diversity
