Great St. Mary's,The University Church, CambridgeChurches are built to the glory of God and for the spiritual comfort of man. Although in this sense ali churches are equal, some have a special place in the life of their community and in the history of religious development. The church of St. Mary the Great is one of these. Standing between the Senate House of Cambridge University and the Guildhall from which the city is administered, it has playecj an important role in the life of both over many centuries. Sermons before the University are stili preachedhere as in very early days, and on important occasions the Mayor and Corporation of the city stili come in procession to its principal parish church. In the turbulent years of the 16th century, it was a home of the English Reformation.
