Since 1990. a new air of freedom and the entrepreneurial spirit have combined to bestow the city with fresh vigour as it proceeds on the road of development. Budapest has every opportunity to once more become the region's hub by the turn of the millennium.
More than two million of us reside in this city. On the outskirts, in residential districts, in the exalted hills of Buda, amidst the sparkling display windows downtown. We're to be found in myriad places, yet we recognise each other everywhere we go, for Budapest is written into our very movements, intonation, our faces too. We love this city, we do, even if we're occasionally not in the best of moods. For everything within its bounds is familiar to us, self-evident, it might be said. This city is our home. And we're pleased when others, too, feel at home while spending time here with us.
Dr. Gábor Demszky,
Mayor of Budapest
