FOREWORD A Reader's Guide to Making America: The Society and Culture ofthe United States is a Forum Series Publication of the United States Information Agency, Division for the Study of the United States. Written by Luther S. Luedtke, Professor of English, University of Southern California, the volume is a companion to Professor Luedtke's book Making America originally published by the United States Information Agency in 1987. Making America contains originál essays by twenty-four major American scholars and covers virtually every aspect of American life and culture. The 1987 book has found wide use internationally in a variety of settings and institutions.
