Prcfacc This book will show you how to do trapunto quilting by machine without having to make little openings in the back of your quilt. It will also explain liow to develop your own stippling technique, and other stitching ideas that will complement your trapunto work. In our quilt world, the word trapunto refers to the techniques that raise elements of a quilting design. Although the task of stuffing is time consuming, these techniques give the effect of bas-relief sculpture that we often see on the walls and facades of buildings. Traditionally this has been done by making tiny holes in the back of the quilt, stuffing the various motifs with additional batting or yarn and then closing the holes. These raised motifs add textural richness to a finished quilt. This new technique will give you these same beautiful results much more easily. Because the lessons in this book call for free-motion quilting, the first part of this book is a review of basic machine quilting tools and techniques, with an emphasis on free-motion quilting. There are many excellent books available that go into more detail about many other aspects of machine quilting. (See bibliography.) The second part contains six lessons, each lesson introducing another way to add texture to your quilt. Quilts made by incorporating one or more of these techniques and designs are shown throughout the book. (The quiltmakers are shown at the back of the book.) The next part of the book contains more original quilting designs, complete with directions. These patterns were designed to be used with several, if not all, of the techniques.
