INTRODUCTION
We normally associate detox programmes with alcohol or drug withdrawal, issues which have become headline news in recent years as Holl3^ood legends and rock stars reveal their life stories. But even those of us who don't take recreational drugs, smoke or drink heavily can still derive great benefit from cleansing our systems of impurities and toxins.
The chemicals and pollutants present in our food, drinking water and the air we breathe make for a complicated cocktail of substances, all compounding the stress of modern-day living. Add to that time constraints and other external stresses, with a dash of genetic material, and bingo! — you have a highly volatile mixture.
This detox programme was devised by developing the simplest, most straightforward naturopathic principle — that your body has its own innate vitality and its own drive for optimum health. If you stop interfering with that basic life force, it will do its best job.
In practice this means no more confusing your body with chemical additives, no more reliance on your adrenal system for energy instead of getting it from well-digested food and no more expecting your body to function without help.
Many of the low-grade illnesses so common today are due to an overload reaction. This occurs when the body is no longer able to handle stress. Symptoms such as endless colds, allergies, that 'need-a-tonic' feeling and constantly cold hands and feet are often the first signs of a failing immune system and a sluggish metabolism.
In 1987, I began working on a stress management programme with a team of health professionals from different disciplines. We incorporated relaxation techni-
