Preface
This Pocket Guide to Nutritional Care is designed to be a brief, yet comprehensive resource that can easily be carried to inpatient or outpatient settings and consulted as needed. Many of the features of previous editions have been retained, including the emphasis on performing a thorough nutrition assessment as a basis for planning nutrition interventions and teaching, an overview of cultural impacts on nutrition, an emphasis on the importance of weight control and physical activity in the maintenance of good health, and the application of enteral and parenteral nutrition support wherever appropriate.
This edition of the book has been extensively revised to bring it up-to-date and to make it more user-friendly. It incorporates recent changes in the field of nutrition, including the replacement of the Recommended Dietary Allowances with Dietary Reference Intakes, the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and the development of new growth charts. An important new feature in this edition is the inclusion of a glossary, printed on shaded pages at the back of this text to make this useful information easy to access. Several content areas have been significantly expanded to reflect their importance in nutritional care and/or new information available since the publication of the previous edition. These subjects include alcohol-related disorders (Chapter 19); sources of caffeine in foods and beverages (Appendix G); food-borne illnesses and food safety (Appendix K); and resources for nutrition intervention, referral, and teaching (Appendix I).
My hope is that this fourth edition of the Pocket Guide to Nutritional Care will be an up-to-date and useful reference for health professionals and that it will serve to improve the care of their patients.
