Editor's ForewordThis second edition of the late Kenneth M. Swezey's 1969 original has been updated and greatly expanded by Robert Scharff, a long-time friend and associate of Swezey's.Swezey drew the materials for the original edition from the huge collection of notes, books, and personal experiences he used in the preparation of magazine articles on chemistry, physics, and the home workshopand in the writing of his books After Dinner Science, Science Magic, Chemistry Magic, and Science Shows You How. Swezey died in 1972.Robert Scharff, himself a widely known author and editorial director, first met Swezey in 1952, when both men were working on books for McGraw-Hill. Scharff recalls, "Ken Swezey could give you a formula for anything. If he didn't have it in his head, he could work it up for you in an hour. He had more information in his headand filesthan any man I have ever met. I just couldn't see this book die. That's the reason I wanted to update it. It was the best book of its type and I hope I was able to keep it up to Ken's standards."
