About the Workshop What is the WAC Th. he WAC is an institute for anthropological research in a small town, Miercurea Ciuc/Csikszereda (Transylvania, Romania). It is an institute in the very center of the field, a center for scholars and student fieldwork. Romania has a lot of characteristic regions, and this institute is in one of the most characteristic regions, in Szeklerland The Wac has been established by native anthropologists working since I9SO in Szekierland's villages and towns, but their researche has an increased anthropological character since 198^. Their papers , books have been published in the Hungarian language in Romania and Hungary. Before 1989 WAC functioned as a network, in a special kind of half-legal situation and only after 1989 appeared the possibility for the legal foundation of the institute. This institute is a framework for researchers interested iri this region. WAC has data banks and a library concerning this region, and technical facilities necessary for fieldresearch and communication. Being a non-profit and non-governamental organization it is sustained from foundation assistance and scientific applications.
